R. KEVIN’S WORLD

As an only child, my selfless bond and connection to others materialized through the competitive spirit of athletic teamwork.  The individual talent that unites the common drive of success uniquely seen in sports, I marvel; especially those of which I once played and the many I enthusiastically watch today.  Born in Long Beach, California, I’m a diehard Lakers, Dodgers, and Rams fan consistent with my Southern California roots.  Following these teams throughout the year allows for exciting get-away moments for both me and my family.  It doesn’t hurt to be a USC graduate and also cheer for the Trojan football team, as well.

I love the excitement of sporting competition.

Fatherless intrigue of a coach’s pride and discipline connected the missing. A family and neighborhood of the caring enriched a purpose for learning; a purpose for growing.  The convergence of acceptance and nurture propelled my desire to succeed in the classroom and in life.

I love the challenge of the learning the unlearned.

In many ways, I embodied what it truly meant to be a student-athlete during my youth. I was proud of this classification and it’s significance of order.  My family continually stressed religion and education as bedrock principles which are the core of life’s progression.  Equally, I was gifted with athletic talent.  Embracing the mantra of the “student-athlete” benefited me not only in the classroom and on the field, but within my neighborhood, as well.  From hardened criminals to respected business leaders, it took the entire “village” to remain vigilant about oversight of those eager to succeed.

From high school football stardom to a full scholarship to the University of the Pacific, I was destined to leverage my athletic talent for a higher education.  Graduating with a degree in computer science and later earning an MBA, I’ve been in the software industry for 20 years.  Because life is about transition, I embark on this passion for writing knowing that I’ll never “work” while doing something I love.

I currently live in Connecticut with my wife, son, and daughter.  We have a wonderful Beagle (pictured above) and we’re slowly getting acclimated to the east coast. In addition to following my sports teams, I find time to explore the open roads of the Northeast on my motorcycle.

He that loves a book will never want a faithful friend,

a wholesome counselor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter.

By study, by reading, by thinking, one may innocently

divert and pleasantly entertain himself,

as in all weathers, as in all fortunes.

When Pigeons Fly Home to Blue

The setting and characters:  Seattle resident, Bailey LaMarr Ullum, is a limo driver and self-professed Black sage and quasi-philosopher within his circle of friends and clients.  He was given the moniker of "Blue" at a young age simply because of his B.L.U. initials, but has quickly adopted the use of the name among family and friends. Twenty years ago, Bailey was transfixed on the details and investigation surrounding a massacre nearby on Mercer Island.  The massacre involved a prominent local businessman and his family (wife and two daughters) along with the live-in nanny (who, by-the-way, had a young daughter who authorities never knew about).  Bailey lives with his sister, Daphne, who is a med student at the University of Washington.  While there, she develops a strong bond and study relationship with three other students;  Issac, Jamal, and Maria.

The story line:  One day while the study group was examining their assigned human cadaver in the lab, Maria became hysterical, frightened, and sick by a uniquely distinguishable birth mark on the cadaver.  Daphne tells Bailey about the incident while he uncovers more information about Maria.  Bailey solicits the help of Daphne's other two study friends, Issac and Jamal, to find out more about the cadaver.  This journey offers some twists and turns reminiscent of a mystery thriller that captures corporate greed and a tragedy that scorned a young girl for life.
